Internal Family Systems (IFS)

IFS Therapy Overview
Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy in Santa Cruz offers a depth-oriented approach to understanding and working with different parts of yourself. In my practice, IFS is a relational and experiential process that supports you in accessing your true authentic Self, rather than trying to fix or eliminate parts. This Self can emerge over time as a steady, compassionate presence that helps bring more balance and clarity to your inner world.
The IFS Therapy Process
This work is integrated with somatic therapy and polyvagal-informed care, supporting your nervous system in moving toward a state of social engagement. When the body feels more regulated, it may become easier to experience connection, safety, and openness. From this place, qualities such as calm, curiosity, compassion, confidence, and creativity can become more accessible. As an expressive arts therapist and LMFT in Santa Cruz, I approach all parts of you with respect and care. Protective parts are understood as adaptive responses shaped by life experience. We move at a pace that supports safety, building trust and internal consent before exploring deeper layers. This process can support greater self-understanding without pressure to change too quickly.

Benefits of IFS Therapy
IFS therapy, combined with somatic and expressive arts approaches, may support emotional regulation, trauma recovery, and personal growth. This approach can also help clients experience greater self-understanding, increased access to compassion and curiosity, and a more connected relationship with themselves over time.
My Approach to IFS
I integrate Jungian-informed therapy and active imagination to deepen this work. Through imagery, symbol, and creative exploration, we develop a relationship with your inner experiences rather than analyzing them from a distance. This approach can be especially helpful for individuals seeking insight-oriented therapy, trauma-informed care, or alternatives to purely cognitive approaches. At times, I may draw from contemplative practices to support gently turning toward difficult inner experiences. This can help reduce avoidance patterns and support a more compassionate relationship with yourself. Internal Family Systems therapy, combined with somatic and expressive arts approaches, is available in-person in Santa Cruz and through telehealth across California.
